Summer is in ‘full swing’ at the Castle Grounds

Two favourite Tamworth bands will be performing some classic and contemporary music from the Castle Grounds Bandstand as Tamworth Borough Council’s hot programme of free Summer Bandstand Concerts continues this weekend.
On Saturday July 7, people are invited to enjoy an afternoon in the park listening to the sounds of brass band music at its best. Amington Band has performed at the Castle Grounds regularly since 1917, entertaining Tamworth audiences for 100 years with their mixture of popular and classical band music.

A century of Girlguiding in Tamworth is being celebrated with the transformation of a bus shelter which will be given a colourful new makeover thanks to youngsters from across the town.

Members of all 30 Girlguiding units in the Tamworth Division were able to take part in the project and get creative by coming up with drawings of their favourite characters and activities for the bus shelter’s new look.

Could this be the best #DotheAethel yet?

A social media campaign encouraging people to #DotheAethel has gone up a level after being joined by actors from TV’s The Last Kingdom, who struck the pose in front of our Aethelflaed statue itself.
The celebrity guests posed for #DotheAethel last Tuesday during their visit to Tamworth to mark the 1100th anniversary of the death of one of the most influential people in the town’s history.

Visit Tamworth for half-term holiday fun

There’s plenty to keep families entertained in Tamworth during the half-term, from castle questing and outdoor theatre, to free craft activities and sports.

If you’re looking for things to keep the children entertained next week, the Visit Tamworth website is a great place to start. It’s full of ideas and has a busy What’s On section, as well as highlighting some of the fantastic attractions the area has to offer.

‘Our Aethel’ due to come home this week as statue is installed

More than a year of consultations, designing, planning and back-breaking labour will come to an end this week when Tamworth’s brand new warrior queen sculpture finally returns home to be revealed to the public for the first time.
Although pictures shared throughout the design process have provided glimpses of the huge sculpture of Tamworth’s Lady of the Mercians, Aethelflaed, only a couple of people have seen the six-metre tall steel figure put together in its entirety – and the overall effect promises to be ‘surprising and unique’.

Touring theatre continues for the summer season

Theatre is continuing on tour in Tamworth, bringing a variety of professional productions to venues across the borough.

The project - Touring Theatre - has produced a range of high-quality shows that started from April this year. All performances have been staged in familiar but unusual community locations in a bid to increase opportunities for people to experience the arts.

Celebrity chef among the latest to ‘Do the Aethel’

A social media campaign encouraging people to #DotheAethel is gathering pace, attracting its first celebrity, an award-winning author and reaching across the world as we prepare to welcome our brand new Aethelflaed statue home to Tamworth next week.
Celebrity TV chef Rosemary Shrager joined the fun by taking a break from a busy day at the Ely Food and Drink Festival to #DotheAethel, making her the first celebrity to get involved in the campaign to raise awareness of the Anglo-Saxon warrior queen who died in Tamworth 1,100 years ago this June.
