Let there be light! Original windows uncovered as part of Tamworth Assembly Rooms refurbishment

Original windows of the main auditorium at Tamworth Assembly Rooms are being uncovered and restored as part of a major project to transform the historic theatre into a modern venue fit for 21st century audiences.
Work to refurbish the building is progressing well with many noticeable changes taking place since principal contractors, Novus Property Solutions, started on site at the end of last year.

Come rain or shine thousands attend St George’s Day festivities in Tamworth

Tamworth’s Castle Grounds were packed with people on Saturday, April 21, for another fantastic St George’s Day extravaganza.

The sun shone for most of the day as estimated crowds of around 11,000 people enjoyed the medieval-themed fun and festivities on offer and not even the rain shower in the afternoon stopped the crowds cheering on St George and his knights.

‘Do the Aethel’ with us and celebrate Tamworth’s history

This year Tamworth is going all out to celebrate the life of one of the most powerful and influential women in Anglo-Saxon England – and we want you to help spread the word about this great local legend.
It was on June 12, 918, that the warrior queen Aethelflaed, Tamworth’s Lady of the Mercians, took her last breath in the town before being finally laid to rest in St Oswald’s Priory in Gloucester, alongside her husband Aethelred.

There is more to shout and cheer about at the celebrations for the St George’s Day event on April 21, with a roaring bargain of 20% off all tickets to the Reluctant Dragon performance coming to Dosthill Park this June.

Popular touring theatre group, Quantum Theatre, will be performing a classic retelling of ‘St George and the Dragon’ from the author of The Wind in the Willows, Kenneth Grahame. The Reluctant Dragon is a funny, touching and enchanting story of bravery and friendship and will be live in Dosthill Park on Saturday, June 23.

Mercian Mosaic workshops take project another step further

An ambitious community arts project to create a huge Mercian Mosaic has taken a big step forward thanks to the efforts of enthusiastic and creative members of the public who took part in a series of workshops during the Easter school holidays.
It is estimated that around 150 volunteers from Tamworth and further afield dropped in and got creative during three days of workshops held at the project’s base of operations in a unit in Ankerside Shopping Centre.

Countdown is on to medieval-themed St George’s Day fun this Saturday


Tamworth’s popular St George’s Day extravaganza is back for 2018 and will take over the Castle Grounds with medieval themed fun for the whole family, this Saturday, April 21 from 10am - 5pm.

Over recent years the event has become a growing success, attracting record-breaking crowds of more than 13,000 people. Another jam-packed, FREE line-up of entertainment has been put together in the hope of building on that success this year.

Drama festival success for Tamworth theatre groups


An exciting four-night run of theatre was an outstanding success last month following the 2018 Tamworth Hastilow Drama Festival, featuring a series of one act plays by the region’s best amateur dramatic groups.

Nine adult and youth theatre companies from Tamworth and the wider area competed throughout the festival, with up to three plays being performed each night from Wednesday, March 14, to Saturday, March 17.

Tamworth Assembly Rooms exhibition goes on tour

A digital touring exhibition for Tamworth Assembly Rooms sets off in May as the historic building continues to undergo a major refurbishment.

The project has now entered the construction phase and Tamworth Arts and Events team want to share the journey with you as well as the theatre’s history and future. The aim of the exhibition is to give residents the opportunity to learn about local heritage and the history of the iconic Victorian building.
